What are crystals and how do they actually work?
By Hayley Jarvis
Are crystals as a healing tool just healy feely mumbo jumbo? Or is there actually some sort of measurable science to how they actually work?
So what makes a crystal a crystal?
The official definition of a crystal is any material that has a regularly repeating internal structure. That means the atoms and molecules that form a crystal, arrange themselves in a precise pattern and literally stack themselves one on top of the other.
The smallest part of a crystal’s molecular structure is called the “unit cell”. This is the part of the crystal that repeats and stacks itself over and over again until the crystal has been fully formed. And it’s this shape of the unit cell that defines how the crystal appears to our eye, that is whether you see Fluorite or Quartz for example.
OK that’s all very well but how do crystals produce healing energy?
An example of measurable energy produced by crystals is in the use of Quartz. Its quite possible you are wearing a watch powered by quartz and have liquid crystal displays on your electronics. These are powered by the crystal using Piezoelectricity. This basically means mechanical pressure is applied to the crystal, literally squeezing it and energy is released in the form of light. (If you turn the lights down and take 2 pieces of raw quartz and rub them together you can see this in action for yourself. You probably don’t want to experiment with your prized quartz collection though!) In the same way, if you pass electricity through a crystal, it squeezes itself and starts vibrating and emits voltage like a battery.
Here comes the good part… This means crystals can absorb, store, amplify and transmit energy.
And our thoughts and intentions are a form of energy!
Crystals receive, store and amplify these thoughts just as they do other forms of energy and then transmit them back to us as a vibration. Our vibration then becomes matched to that of the crystal, raising our vibration to the now amplified vibration of our intention. This can help us to heal ourselves or rebalance and restore equilibrium OR align us to the vibration of manifesting that which we desire.
Another example of this kind of resonance is sound healing. It works by entraining our vibration to match that of a healing sound vibration produced by tuning forks, drums, gongs or singing bowls, played on or around us. Think about the sound of a drum and how it makes you feel. If it beats fast it can make you feel excited and energised while a slow drum can make you feel relaxed, trance like even. Crystal healing is no different. Our vibration resonates to that of the crystals on or near to us. This is vibrational resonance. It works with metronomes also, if you place a few metronomes together and start them off intermittently so they are out of sync with each other, within a very short time, literally minutes, they will have synced up and be beat matched. You can stop one, whilst the rest keep to their beat and then start it again out of time and watch it sync itself over and over again.
We are so affected by the energy that surrounds us. We can’t see it but it is coming at us in the form of electromagnetic frequencies emitted by our technology, other people and their emotions or even their aura, the vibration of sounds we can’t even hear because the source is too far away but the vibration still reaches and affects us, powerful lunar energy that governs the movement of the ocean so imagine the affect it can have on our emotions, our environment, being on planes, trains, in cars, the weather etc. This is why it’s so important to ensure we regularly restore and reset our energy to its natural equilibrium. We can do this in a variety of ways and one of those ways is using crystals.
If that’s hard to get your head around just consider for a moment that everything is energy. We are energy. The chair you are sitting in is energy, the table in front of you. Everything is energy. The entire material world is nothing but vibration. This is not woo woo, this is physics.
We tend to identify only with our body, the physical manifestation of our being, yet we are so much more than this. Essentially, we are energetic beings having a human experience and our energetic vibration will continue long after we step out of this physical version of ourselves. Think of it like our bodies being rental cars we return after our vacation on this planet.
But where do all the metaphysical meanings and properties assigned to a crystal come from? Who decides that?
They come from a few places. A lot have been handed down over the thousands of years crystals have been used historically by the ancient Greeks, Egyptians, Romans and in Chinese medicine for healing and for protection. And some come from the way in which the rocks themselves are actually formed.
Humour me for a minute here, we’re going back to the science again…
So, there are 3 types of rock formations, igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary. They each come into being a different way.
Igneous rocks form when molten liquid cools and solidifies or crystallises in the earth itself or can form as minerals above the earth from volcanic lava. The nature of their fiery formation gives them a fiery, creative and transformative energy.
Metamorphic rocks come about when existing rocks of any type undergo geological changes usually due to high heat or pressure as the earth moves. This results in their changing to form a completely new rock imbued with a mystical, spiritual energy.
Sedimentary rocks form when pieces of rock are loosened by weather or erosion, then transported to a pocket where sediment is trapped. If the sediment is buried deeply, it becomes compacted and cemented forming an entirely new rock. These rocks are said to have a balanced, grounded energy due to being created by the Earth’s action.
Another factor is colour. A crystal will absorb all the colours of light but only reflect back some of them and its that reflected light we see and interpret. A black crystal has absorbed all the colour frequencies so it looks dark while a white or clear crystal is reflecting all the colour frequencies. The myriad other colours we see are everything in-between.
In the same way that crystals absorb, store, amplify and transmit information energy they absorb, reflect and transmit light healing energy. The colour or light being reflected, will dictate specific healing frequencies and properties. So we can assume certain qualities of crystals depending on the colour we see. For instance:
And the list goes on…
So, when it comes to choosing and using crystals you can find yourself drawn to certain colours because on an intuitive level, that place of inner knowing and ancient wisdom deep, deep inside you, understands what you need to feel complete.
Colour energy, just like sound and all the other vibrational energies discussed in this article affect us deeply at soul level.
“Mere colour, unspoiled by meaning, and unallied with definite form, can speak to the soul in a thousand different ways”. ~Oscar Wilde
And so can crystals. Can you hear them?
