Let’s Get Real About Grounding
You can’t build a house in the sky. That’s the thing about spiritual work, it might feel expansive, otherworldly, even euphoric at times, but if you’re not grounded, you’re a balloon with a frayed string. Drifting. Vulnerable. Unfocused. And energetically wide open to whatever happens to float by.
Grounding is not optional. It’s essential. Whether you’re pulling cards, doing energy work, meditating, connecting with spirit, or just opening up emotionally. Grounding is what keeps you tethered to your own centre. Without it, you’re likely to absorb junk that doesn’t belong to you, get foggy, anxious, drained, or straight-up unwell.
Let’s talk about why grounding matters so much in spiritual work and how to actually do it in a way that’s effective, fast.
Why Grounding Matters
Here’s what happens when you skip grounding:
- Your nervous system stays heightened. You can’t integrate what just moved through.
- You might confuse other people’s emotions or energy with your own.
- You feel “floaty,” spacey, unproductive, or detached from reality.
- Your physical body gets neglected while your spiritual self runs the show.
- You’re more susceptible to energetic overload, spiritual bypassing, or burnout.
Spiritual growth is real. But so is nervous system regulation. And you’re living in a physical body that needs stability, nourishment, and a sense of safety.
Grounding brings you back into yourself. It lets your body process whatever came up in your spiritual work. It lets your aura seal. It helps you digest the shift.
How to Know If You're Ungrounded
Some classic signs:
- Headache or dizziness after energy work or ritual
- Struggling to focus or complete tasks
- Feeling “too open” or overly emotional
- Trouble sleeping or staying in your body
- Random aches or emotional outbursts that feel foreign
If you’re nodding at any of these, chances are you’re not as grounded as you think.
Easy Ways to Ground After Spiritual Work
You don’t need crystals, apps, or a Himalayan salt cave. You just need a few tools that bring you back to your body and the present moment.
Here are some of my go-tos:
- Touch Your Body
Rub your feet, tap your chest, run your fingers through your scalp. Literally bring awareness to your physical form.
- Eat Something Rooting
Food is magic. Especially earthy, warm food. Think root veg, grains, protein. Avoid raw or light food straight after deep spiritual work. Cook something with intention and love.
- Get Outside. Barefoot if Possible
The Earth doesn’t need your spiritual CV. Just your bare feet and your presence. Let your soles meet the soil.
- Cold Water Rinse
Run your hands under cold water. Better yet, splash your face or take a brisk shower. It snaps you right back into your body.
- Breathe With Intention
Inhale slowly through the nose, exhale longer through the mouth. Imagine roots growing from the base of your spine into the Earth. Stay there for a few cycles.
- Say Your Name Out Loud
Sounds silly, but this one’s powerful. “I am Me. I am here. I am safe. All is well in my world” It helps reclaim your energy and re-anchor your sense of self.
Make Grounding a Ritual, Not an Afterthought. Treat it as sacred. Make it part of the ritual, not something you throw in if you remember. If you’re guiding others through energy work or emotional healing, this is even more critical. People trust you to hold a container and that container has to touch the Earth.
If you’ve been feeling scattered, heavy, or like your spiritual practice is starting to unravel your daily life, it’s time to come back to ground. Not as punishment. As a kindness. Your body is the vessel. Your soul chose to be here, not up there.
